Our firm specializes in the auditing of school districts, cities, townships, villages, and utility authorities. In addition, we have extensive experience in the auditing of federal programs in accordance with Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Circular A-133.

Our knowledge of the unique requirements of governmental units, combined with our experience with the various computerized accounting and payroll systems used in the State of Michigan, has enabled us to serve our clients in the most efficient manner possible while also offering value-added suggestions that are targeted at improving internal controls and business practices.  

Our Team

Phil Saurman, CPA, a Shareholder with the firm, heads our Governmental Services team and has 40 years of experience in the governmental auditing industry. Over that time, Phil has participated in audits and/or consulting services at every school district, city and township in Kent County, giving our firm a unique perspective on the operations of local government in West Michigan. Phil is a member of the Accounting, Auditing and Budgeting committee of the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International, and has presented numerous educational sessions on a variety of topics at ASBO annual conferences. At Hungerford, Aldrin, Nichols & Carter, PC, he anchors a professional staff consisting of trained specialists committed to the municipalities and school districts we serve.

Jason Mitchell, CPA, (Manager, Governmental Services) has devoted his career to public accounting and is specialized in providing auditing and consulting services for governmental municipalities, school districts and non-profits, in addition to ensuring federal program/single audit compliance. Jason coordinates the Governmental Services' technical proficiency as well as business development and marketing efforts.

Adriane Schrauben, CPA, (Manager) is responsible for providing audit, review, compilation, and tax return preparation services to a variety of governmental business and individual clients. Her specialties include auditing school districts as well as estate and trust tax preparation.

Dave Waichum, CPA, (Senior Manager) has over 35 years of experience in governmental accounting and auditing, both as an independent auditor, and for 28 years with Kent County, where he was Finance/Fiscal Director for over 20 years. Dave applies his knowledge in conducting federal program audits in accordance with OMB Circular A-133.

Jane Saurman, (Senior Governmental Consultant) has over 15 years of auditing experience with varied municipalities and also served as the City of Kentwood Treasurer for 5 years, providing our firm an additional source of knowledge of local government financial operations, especially in the area of property tax revenue.

Dave Biller, (Senior Governmental Consultant) the Business Manager for Wyoming Public Schools for over 30 years, adds a wealth of knowledge and experience to the internal control/auditing and fraud prevention/detection areas of our audit engagements.

Chris Pegman, CISA, (Senior Information Technology Auditor) provides the expertise to assist our audit teams and clients in the rapidly changing and expanding information technology industry.
