Firm Repeats as "Best and Brightest" Recipient
For the second straight year, Hungerford, Aldrin, Nichols & Carter, PC has been named one of West Michigan's "101 Best and Brightest Companies To Work For." The 2008 awards are presented by the Michigan Business & Professional Association (MBPA) to firms and businesses in the region to "demonstrate why each of them would be an ideal place for employees to work." Hungerford was recognized for its longevity of service and loyalty by its employees, flexible working opportunities, and also the firm's extensive education and development program for employees. Firm Announces 2008 Scholarship Winner
Anastasia Nowak of Whitehall is the 2008 winner of the Hungerford Accounting Scholarship, a $2,000 scholarship the firm awards each year to a student in Grand Valley State University's Accounting & Taxation Department. Nowak is working toward a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with a double degree in accounting and finance, and expects to graduate in December of this year. She then immediately starts work on her MSA, also at Grand Valley. Firm Announces Additions to Staff
In an effort to continue to offer our clients ongoing, personalized service, Hungerford is expanding its staff, an indication of our continued belief in the future of Michigan, and specifically West Michigan. We’re proud to have served the needs of businesses and individuals in the area since 1941, and we’re charting a course to continue that same commitment well into the future.
To that end, we’re pleased to announce the additions of three new employees who joined the firm in December, and another three who joined us in January. Chris Pegman has joined the firm as a Senior Accountant, specializing in auditing and consulting services for governmental units, and auditing Information Technology systems. Chris attended Calvin College, where he earned his Bachelor degree in Accountancy. Jon Sytsma also joined the firm as a Senior Accountant, specializing in taxation. Jon also attended Calvin College and grew up in Byron Center. Marie Quillan is a new addition to our Small Business Services department as a Staff Accountant. She is a CPA with an MSA from Grand Valley State University. Prior to pursuing a career in the accounting field, Marie’s undergraduate degree was in Mechanical Engineering.
Three others joined our team in January. Janet Bruner joins us as a Staff Accountant. She graduated from Jenison High School, and will graduate from Grand Valley State in April. Kyle Sischo has also joined the firm as a Staff Accountant. He graduated from GVSU in April with his BBA in Accounting & Finance. We’d also like to welcome, actually welcome back, Jennie Streng. She was an intern with the firm last tax season, and we liked her so much Jennie has now joined the firm as a Staff Accountant.
This tax season we’re also pleased to welcome four college interns to the firm. They are Justine Dominick, Steve Jahr, and Chris Veldman from Grand Valley State, and Rob Nowicki from Aquinas College.
In-House Accountants Seminar Held
Hungerford's annual In-House Accountants Seminar was held December 4 at Centennial Country Club. This year's seminar included updates on payroll and tax issues, along with other pertinent topics affecting businesses in Michigan. As we've done in the past, guests were asked to donate to our designated charity in lieu of a registration fee. This year's charity is Elves & More - West Michigan, a non-profit organization bringing hope to children. The organization provides bikes and treasure boxes to an entire neighborhood of children living in need. In 2006 the organization reached nearly 1,200 children with 900 bikes and 300 treasure boxes in the Baxter neighborhood of Grand Rapids. We'd like to thank this year's seminar attendees for their generous support.
